Saint Michael Archangel

God had made Heaven and the Earth and all the Angels and all the extra important Angels, called Archangels. (Like an important Bishop is called an Archbishop.) The Archangels were God's special subjects.  One Archangel was called Michael (along with St. Gabriel and St. Raphael). Michael was "the Angel of the Lord", who was sent to Moses, Jacob and Abraham and others throughout history. Another Archangel was Lucifer, who was so beautiful that the other Angels called him the Son of the Morning.

All were content in Heaven. Then one day Lucifer, Son of the Morning, said to himself: "Why should God be the most important person in Heaven? Why, shouldn't I be? I am beautiful and I am powerful. In fact, I am just as important as God, and I shall fight Him and have Heaven for myself!"

So, Lucifer went around Heaven, and he collected a lot of other Angels who also didn't want to be less important than God, until he had a Great Army. Then they marched up to the Throne of God and and challenged Him to Heaven.  God called Michael the Archangel, and made him gather together a Mighty Army of Angels on God's side.

There was a Great Battle in Heaven--Michael and his Angels fighting with Lucifer; and, Lucifer fought, and his Angels fought; but, they did NOT win. And Michael drove Lucifer out of Heaven, and he fell down to hell; and, all his bad angels were driven down after him, and as the last one disappeared from sight forever and the Gate of Heaven shut tightly, a great Shout went up for Michael's Army.

So, now you know why we sometimes say in our prayers, "Holy St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in the Day of Battle," because he is so good at battles and a great warrior.

The Symbols of Santa Muerte

Some images of the Santa Muerte may be found with different symbols, holding different items in her hands or including different objects at her feet.  A common image is of Santa Muerte carrying a scythe and a world globe.  The following are the most common symbols.

The Scythe…
The scythe or sickle has several meanings; first it is symbolic of endings.  This doesn’t necessarily meaning the ending of a lifespan, although in certain conditions it is a symbol of death itself.  It can also mean the ending of a time period, a routine, a dispute, an adventure, a relationship, etc...  Endings come in many forms.  Santa Muerte uses her scythe to cut away a persons link to something.  It is also symbolic of death since its believed by her followers that when a persons time is up she is the one who comes to escort the soul into the next existence.  In this instance her scythe cuts the remaining ties to our worldly life.  The scythe is also a symbol of harvest, prosperity, and hope.  It can be said that the scythe she holds is a symbol of harvesting our dreams and desires.  A sign of a persons request made to her will flourish, grow, and manifest.  It cuts away obstacles that hold a person from making progress and clears a path for guidance.  In addition, the scythe can symbolize power and strength.  This can be in many forms.  It can symbolize the power and strength that Santa Muerte herself carries over all humans and over her realm of the dead.  It can also indicate power and strength in a person’s spellwork with Santa Muerte, or power and strength over enemies.

The World Globe…
The world globe represents Santa Muerte’s power over the entire world.  She is not held back or limited to whom she can rule.  She will eventually claim everyone living on earth.  Santa Muerte is not limited to location or held back by time or space.  She can claim judgment at any given moment.  There are no boundaries.  It’s believed that after God, death (Santa Muerte) is the most powerful figure in the world, since without death there is no life, there is no existence.  The globe is an indication that Santa Muerte rules over all race, religion, culture, and belief.....she’s just known by other names....but most, if not all, religions have a ruler over death.  Here, we call her Santa Muerte.

The Owl…
The owl is symbolic of darkness, nighttime, and keen vision.  Santa Muerte’s owl companion indicates powerful guidance for those who ask.  Many people take their problems and questions to Santa Muerte because they seek the knowledge and a solution....an answer to their blindness.  Blindness because they “see” no solution.  The owl’s sharp vision offers the light a person needs to overcome blindness.  It guides a person to solution and success.  The owl is also connected to great wisdom and intelligence, hence the term “that wise old owl”.  Santa Muerte’s owl companion is her messenger.  Oftentimes a person who works with Santa Muerte will have visions of an owl through dreams.  These dreams are commonly discovered to contain important messages Santa Muerte wishes to share with one of her followers.  Owls have also been seen during waking hours as well or the hoot of an owl, although it is not visible, can be heard.

The Hourglass…
The hourglass, or sandglass, symbolizes the hands of time.  Each grain of sand is a moment of time itself.  Each grain that her hourglass contains is indication of a person’s lifespan.  When the hourglass is empty, life on earth is over.  At the same time death is a continuation of life.  This continuation can be in another realm or again here on earth.  Some people believe that when a person gets a calling from Santa Muerte each gain of sand in their hourglass are actually tiny microscopic skull and pieces of bone.  The hourglass also symbolizes patience.  Ask and wait.  People who ritually work with Santa Muerte first must give before receiving her gifts.  Giving comes in the form of the altar, candles, prayer, and offerings.  Once these are made the person waits for her to answer.  Patience pays off.  Santa Muerte’s hourglass is also connected to time travel.  Past, present, and future.  She can teach divination to those who she feels are deserving of the knowledge.  She can answer questions presented to her concerning a person’s life or the history of a place.  Any oracle can be dedicated to her in order to receive her guidance in how to most beneficially use it.

The Lamp…
The lamp represents a reflection of her...her presence, her help, her existence, her guidance.  With her lamp she lights the path of those who follow her and those who work with her.  It lights up a person’s direction and/or mental capacity, giving the person a more expanded train of thought.  New ideas, new insights, and deeper levels of clarity.

The Cloak or Robe…
The cloak. Most commonly Santa Muerte wears a long hooded cloak which extends to her feet, much like the one the Virgin of Guadalupe wears.  It drapes over her boney frame covering almost all of her with the exception of her face, hands, feet, and sometimes the lower half of her legs.  Her cloak is symbolic of the protection she extends to her devotees.  She opens her cloak wide and covers the person with it to keep them safe from whatever it is they need protection from.  A person can have just one single white statue of Santa Muerte and change the color of her cloak according to the work being done.  The basic colors for cloaks are red, white, and black but other colors can be made as well.  There are several places that sell cloaks or robes already made for Santa Muerte but these are usually very expensive.  If you are handy with a sewing machine they can be made very inexpensively at home.  Some women make her a wedding gown which is draped over the statue when ritually working with her for marriage and commitment purposes.  Other colors that may serve well are blue, purple, gold, and brown.  Easily dress her in different robes.  This keeps from having to purchase different color statues for related spellwork.

The History of Santa Muerte

La Flaca (The Skinny One), Nina Santa (Holy Girl), La Calaca (The Skeleton) are just some of the names given to the skeleton saint La Santisima Muerte (The Most Holy Death).

Although she is not recognized by the Catholic Church, her followers consider her a saint. Some believe that she is the Virgin Mary (specifically Our Lady of Guadalupe) representing the way she would look in death. Others believe her to be a representation of the Aztec ruler of death.

It’s believed that Santa Muerte is rooted as far back as to the Aztecs, particularly to the goddess Mictlancihuatl (the Aztec goddess of death) and the wife of Mictlantecuhtli (the Aztec god of death) who together ruled over the underworld and the world of the dead.

Interestingly, the spider, the owl and the bat are associated with Mictlantecuhtli (the Aztec god of death) as they are with Santa Muerte.  Because she is known as the Lady of the Dead, and for other similarities, she and Santa Muerte are considered one in the same.

Mictlantecuhtli has been described as a bloody skeleton figure.  He wore necklaces made of human bones and his clothing oftentimes was adorned with bones, teeth and eyeballs.  Mictlancihuatl was viewed in much the same way.  In the ancient Aztec culture skeletons and bones were viewed differently than they are today.  The Aztecs saw them as symbols of fertility, health, and abundance.

Death was an important part of life to the Aztecs, an extension into another world.  Life went on even after death.  The dead were never forgotten.  Instead they were honored and invoked.  They held special rituals in honor of the deceased which is where, in my opinion, the feast of Day of The Dead started.  They believed that forty days after a persons death the spirit would return.

The beauty of working with Santa Muerte is that she is a complete and total magical system in herself.  This means that she can be called upon for every single need a person may have.  Unlike the Saints and other deities who can only be called upon for issues that are within their particular workings or patronage, Santa Muerte has no limits or restrictions.

Santa Muerte does not separate good and evil.  There is no distinction between the two in her eyes.  Petitions are just petitions, cries for help in time of need.  She will respond to requests of any nature and will never cast judgment upon a person for what they ask or who they are.  Santa Muerte will grant many requests that are shunned by other Saints.

Whether Santa Muerte began as the symbol of the Aztec goddess of death or the representation of Our Lady of Guadalupe will never be resolved.  Today, she represents a strong influence for many followers of the Catholic Church and beyond.  She can be used with or without other spirits and Saints by anyone willing to follow her.  Santa Muerte accepts everyone alike. There are no rules.

Please see my online course on Santa Muerte for more information.

Cleansings in Curanderismo

Cleansings in Curanderismo

A limpia (spiritual cleansing) refers to the removal of negativity within the body, mind, spirit and/or surroundings.  It’s believed that negativity (anything that upsets the mind-body-spirit balance) comes from a variety of sources and is encountered every single day.  It can be found in one’s lifestyle, habits, environment, surroundings, traumatic events, spirits, or spellwork cast upon you.  Physical illnesses can leave behind a negative effect long after the named illness is gone.  People you cross paths with during the course of the day can also leave their mark on you causing a spiritual illness or just simply picking up some of their spiritual mess.

In Curanderismo everything is made up of energy.  Every object around us, your thoughts, emotions, fears, illnesses, actions, and even your words are made up of energy.  Ever notice how someone’s words can stay with us for years?  Ever sense an argument between two people?  Ever been in a fantastic mood then be brought down by someone who wasn’t?  Ever had a fight with someone and years later it still makes you mad?  Ever feel the “seriousness” in a court house?  In a hospital?  It’s all energy.

The human body acts like a sponge which absorbs some of the energy of everything we cross paths with.  The affect of all these different types of energy accumulate in our own essence and cause all sorts of things to happen.  Once these energies are absorbed they cannot be released on their own.  The only way to rid yourself of these energies is through spiritual cleansing, a sort of spiritual hygiene, to clear away unwanted clutter.

Different tools can be used during the cleansing ritual, such tools include but are not limited to, raw unbroken eggs, brass crucifixes, lemons, limes, fresh herbs, tobacco, special herbal liquids, dry herbs, holy water, and fumigation.  Each tool works in much the same way as the other yet each of them bring a different type of strength to the spiritual experience.  I’ll briefly go over what some of these methods are used for.

Egg Cleansings Are Good For.....
All purpose, basically all problems at a mild level, general maintenance, spiritual illness, after a psychical illness, fatigue, stress, road opener, hidden obstacles, bad luck, nightmares, bad habits

The egg in its raw form has a natural ability to absorb “things that don’t belong”.  Prayers and/or the help from spirit add to the cleansing ritual.  Sometimes the recipients name is written directly on the egg to create a link.  When the healer is faced with a client who has a physical known problem in a certain part of the body the healer may write the name of the Saint on the egg who is patron over that specific area of the body.  For instance, the client has a problem in the breast; the spiritual healer may choose to write St Agatha on the egg since she is the patron of breast cancer, and other breast problems.  You call in the aide of a particular Saint in order to work on a specific problem area.

Also, the raw egg is known to explode during a cleansing when it comes in contact with a person who is carrying around strong, aggressive energy.  During a spiritual cleansing if the egg absorbs too much negativity at once it becomes so full of spiritual dirt and debris that the egg can explode right in the healer’s hand.

Herb Cleansings Are Good For....
Same as the egg cleansing

Cleansings can be preformed with bundles of freshly picked herbs which are tied together with white or red sting to hold them together.  Once the bundle is tied....making a small type of hand held broom.....  It’s sprinkled with Holy Water and prayed over, asking for guidance and help to restore the person to their healthy, normal state.  The herbal broom is used to sweep downwards over the body to remove negativity within.  Herbal brooms can be made from one single herb or a combination of herbs.  My personal preference is a combination of rosemary, rue, and pine twigs.

Crucifix Cleansings Are Good For....
Same as the egg but with the added benefit of having a closer connection with your own spirit helpers… to break dark spellwork, the evil eye, punish enemies, exorcism of demonic powers and evil spirits.

Sometimes the healer may give a cleansing with the use of a large hand held Crucifix.  Not only is the Crucifix a very effective tool for removing dark arts but its effectiveness is greatly enhanced if it is made of brass or another kind of metal as opposed to wood or plastic.
With the Crucifix “passes” over the body are made in small Crosses as opposed to the downward sweeping motions you would make if you were using an egg or an herbal broom.

Citrus Cleansings Are Good For....
Breaking spellwork, stubborn energies that linger after attempting removal, fears, phobias, mental disturbances, nightmares.

Fresh uncut lemons or limes can be used not only to remove stagnant and stubborn energies but are a powerful defense against brujeria (witchcraft).  Lemons and limes can break the effects of spells, curses and hexes.  The disposal for citrus is with fire.

Fumigation (smudging) Cleansings Are Good For....
Same as the egg but specifically for soul loss

This method of cleansing is most favored by those who like working more with nature since it brings the four elements to the spiritual exercise.  First, you have the energy of the plant itself and the element of EARTH.  Secondly you have the representation and element of FIRE (the burning charcoal).  Third you bring in the element of AIR (the smoke itself).  And lastly if you incorporate the spraying of Holy Water afterwards, you have the element of WATER.  Together in a spiritual cleansing creates a powerful combination of the four elements.  But since the body is a representation of all on earth (ashes to ashes, dust to dust) makes the spiritual fumigation perfect for recovering from soul loss.

I hope this answers some questions, inspires new ideas, and helps you in your own spiritual journey.  Many blessings.
